Interview with Author Aaron David

Aaron David
Bolton, near Manchester, England, UK.

Good morning, Aaron, and welcome to Vision and Verse, the Place for Art and Authors.  Are you camera shy?
I don’t publish photos of myself; I have the perfect face for radio and the perfect voice for text.

That's fine with us.  We get the photo thing.  There are some photos out there of a bowling ball with lipstick and earrings pretending to be me. Tell us what have you written.
I did it backwards; wrote a novel then moved on to short stories. The novel is “The Tale of the Ancient Marina”. I set out to write a funny book & was surprised when readers told me it was a thriller… but a very funny one. Two short story collections; “The Skiffies”; four mind-melting sci-fi stories and “The Almost English Dictionaarony”; four shorts and four “Bogas Biographies”. “Rhyming Stuff” is my poetry collection and “The Complete Works” is everything in one tome.

What is your favorite genre to write?
Humour is my thing but last year my very good friend, Tony Gilbert gave me an idea for a sci-fi story. I wrote it was hooked, hence “The Skiffies”.

Favorite food.
Bacon butties (Northern English for sandwiches).

Tea or coffee?
Tea every time; a pint mug with two teabags, five sugars and skimmed milk.

Pizza or ice cream?
Hmmm if either are bacon butty flavoured I’ll take that.

Where would you like to visit?
I’d love to see the Northern Lights close up.

Favorite musical artist. Do you listen to music when you write?  What?
Solo Elvis Costello, band Carter USM. I also like Bruuuuuuuce Springsteen, The Beautiful South, Billy Joel, The Jam, Meatloaf and many, many more on this magnificent box set.

What makes you laugh?
Wit mainly but silly stuff; Airplane, Something about Mary, Dumb and Dumber, Monty Python (obviously), Blackadder. I think Red Dwarf is the best thing ever.

How old were you when you started writing?
Thirty one; we were awaiting the imminent arrival of our third baby in four years. Finding myself with a lot of time waiting for them waking, needing to be fed and changed etc. I decided to use the time constructively.

Describe your perfect evening.
A magnificent meal cooked by my wonderful wife, conversation with my family, a nice Prosecco, something entertaining on TV and a lottery win.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Anywhere and everywhere; ordinary daily events, ideas often come to me when I’m driving or very late at night

What do you do when you get a writer's block?
Walk away; I don’t see writing as a job. When an idea gets into my head I have to get it onto the screen. It’s an obsession.

Who is your favorite author?
I don’t read “mainstream” authors now, there’s a wealth of talent out there in the Indie wold. Ian Hutson is my favourite author; he’s a genius and completely nuts. Other brilliant authors include Tony Gilbert, Christoph Fischer, Carol E Wyer, Andy Lennon and many, many more on this equally magnificent box set.

Best book you ever read.
The Red Dwarf novels.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
My Mum. She died when I was twenty years old, she was fifty eight. She gave me a moral code and set of values but most importantly, my sense of humour.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
Peter Cook. I think we’d have a really good laugh. Also Tom Sharpe; I’ve never read any of his work but I’m told I write like him.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?
Don’t get into it for the money. Join a writers’ group or several. The more you write the better you will become.
